On May 5, over 12,000 Missouri home care attendants celebrated a huge victory for the future of quality home care in our state. By a 60-percent to 40-percent margin, we voted to unite in the Missouri Home Care Union for a stronger voice on the job, in our communities and in the State Capitol.

]]> Missouri home care attendants join home care workers in more than 10 other states--including Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, Washington and California--who have united to improve the quality of care available to seniors and people with disabilities.

For months Missouri attendants and their consumers have been coming together in Jefferson City to fight against state budget cuts that threaten home care for over 40,000 Missourians. One day after hundreds gathered in the State Capitol to lobby lawmakers on the dangerous effect arbitrary hours caps would have on consumers, the state withdrew the hours caps proposal.

"When we stopped the cuts, we showed what we can do when we come together," said Jeanetta Caw, a home care worker from St. Joseph. "Now, with today's victory, we're even stronger in our fight to save quality home care."

It's our turn to win big.

The Missouri Home Care Union launches ad campaign to stop cuts

With serious threats to the home care Missouri seniors and people with disabilities depend on being considered in Jefferson City, the Missouri Home Care Union launched an aggressive ad campaign this week to educate the public and Missouri lawmakers on what is at stake for Missouri families. Protect home care for Missourians

Home care attendants and consumers are coming together around the state to protect the critical care nearly 50,000 Missouri seniors and people with disabilities depend on.
Seniors, people with disabilities and home care attendants held a press conference April 7th in the Capitol to call on the Governor and their elected officials to protect Missouri families by stopping attempts to cut care and fully funding the state's home care program. Victory in our fight to stop home care caps!

On February 18th, we made a difference for Missouri seniors and people with disabilities. Home care attendants and consumers from throughout the state traveled to Jefferson City to tell the state not to cut critical home care services for Missouri seniors and people with disabilities.

We united with Centers for Independent Living and advocacy groups to stop a plan that would have devastated seniors and people with disabilities by capping consumers' hours at less than two hours per day-and we won!

The very next day the Governor announced that he was withdrawing his proposed caps on consumers' hours.

We know that when we unite we have the strength to protect the people we care for. Even though we stopped these arbitrary caps on hours, we must stand together to make sure home care is protected and fully funded.

Our quality home care message was heard loud and clear in the Capitol and in the media:

"People with disabilities and their caregivers won a victory ... The Missouri Home Care Union praised the decision to drop the caps." - St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"Consumers, home-care attendants and advocates rallied at the Capitol last week to protest the measure, which the Missouri Home Care Union says would have put thousands of Missourians in harm's way." - Missourinet

Caregivers to Gov. Nixon: Don't cut care!

The state is looking to make home care cuts that will devastate seniors and people with disabilities. We need to stop this tragedy.

We have to stop these cuts. Too many Missourians count on home care to stay independent in their homes and near loved ones. These cuts threaten that care and will force thousands into more costly institutions they can't afford and don't need--while seriously damaging Missouri's Consumer-Directed Services Program. We cannot let that happen.

Join home care providers across the state by calling Governor Jay Nixon today. Tell him we're counting on him to fight for home care funding.

Home care attendants moving forward with a rerun of our election

Shortly after 85% of home care attendants said YES for a stronger voice, a private company sued to keep us from having our union.]]> The court ruled that we have a right to our union but found that an error occurred when the state requested lists of attendants eligible to vote in the election.

The Missouri Home Care Union and the state jointly asked for a rerun of the election to ensure that all attendants are involved in the process. The judge granted our request for a rerun.

The ruling has protected the ability of home care attendants to have a voice and will give them freedom to decide for themselves what they want to do.
